Their relationship changes shape yet lingers, as do the important questions about women and violence. Her quest to find out what it is that she desires—a quest that will last decades and is recounted with the seriousness it deserves, lightened with touches of dry comedy—ends in the discovery that she is and has always been a writer.

Kohler sidesteps nothing; her private rage, regret, heartbreak, and revelation mingle unforgettably with the public shame of apartheid. Once We Were Sisters is an exquisite and devastating book.

Once We Were Sisters by Sheila Kohler review – a devastating reckoning
She wants the world to know the secrets of her early life but, even more importantly, she wants to come clean with Robin about a set of tragic circumstances that led to their separation as teenagers. The story is told in alternating chapters from three points of view. All three main characters show amazing growth throughout the story. I wanted all of them to succeed. Richards must have done extensive research into the system of foster care, for everything seemed quite authentic.
A few plot elements are perhaps a little too convenient, but although I could understand where the author was going with them, I could have wished for a little less predictability in those areas. However, I was able to forgive it for the most part simply because of the overall strength of the story. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
